With valuable contributions from three art historians and curators – Maria Grazia Messina, Anna Maria Montaldo and Giorgia Gastaldon – this catalogue of the exhibition Unica. Sei storie di artiste italiane (Unique: Six Stories of Italian Women Artists), held at Spazio Ilisso in Nuoro, offers an in-depth look at the cultural history of twentieth-century Italy, focusing on the position of women and on the work of six remarkable figures: Carla Badiali, Carol Rama, Giosetta Fioroni, Carla Accardi, Tomaso Binga (Bianca Pucciarelli Menna) and Maria Lai. It explores the isolation of women in the art world and the political commitment that went hand in hand with their work. The authors shed light not only on the artists’ output but also on the challenges they faced and the battles they fought in twentieth-century Italy. The colour plates, some of which reproduce previously unpublished works, each trace a specific phase in an artist’s career, from the pre-war years to the 1980s, telling the history of art through the story of women’s emancipation and liberation.
